connecticut on the floor here, and i know they are coming to speak about the horrible tramgd in newtown last friday. i will abbreviate my remarks so they can have the floor and commend both of them for extraordinary statements last night at a memorial service. i will not forget ever some of the things they shared with us about this terrible tragedy. but i come to the floor this morning just for a few moments to pay tribute to one of my great friends and one of my great colleagues, danny inouye, who passed away yesterday. the majority leader has done such an extraordinary job recounting his life, and i think back what it must have meant to him as he witnessed pearl harbor at the age of 20. he said that he realized at the time that the pilots in those planes that were bombing his family and others in hawaii were people of the same ancestry as his father, and it hurt him. it hurt him as well to be branded as suspect because of his japanese origin and to see literally tens of thousands of japanese americans interned in camps because their loyalty was questioned. he took the opportunity to volunt

. an update on the aftermath of the elementary school massacre in newtown, connecticut. herse hearses are making their way through the town today. vice president biden is meeting in the next hour with law enforcement representatives as well as cabinet members. what he's doing is leading the president's effort to come up with new proposals to reduce gun violence. also today attorney general eric holder, he is meeting with law enforcement officials and first responders in newtown. we have learned new information about the gunman's mother. friends say that nancy lanza went on vacation alone at a resort in new hampshire days before the shooting. she checked out last thursday afternoon. her son killed her and went on his murderous rampage friday morning. we've also been able to piece together details about the gunman, adam lanza's mother nan nancy. haven't heard much from the father. mary snow is taking a closer look at a strange relationship between the father and son. >> his home is less than hour away from where his son adam oepd fire in sandy hook elementary school, but a person that k

newtown police as well as state troopers are expected to be on-site when schools open two hours later than unusual. sandy hook elementary, though, will remain closed. on monday, moving trucks arrived at the school to transport furniture to chalk hill school in the neighboring town of monroe, which will reopen to accommodate the sandy hook students. >> they're taking pictures of all the walls, everything where all the decorations were and they were be painstakingly put back together as close as possible to recreate that room. >> monroe has opened their arms because we are a small, new england community. and our neighbors are our family. >> on monday, the first two funerals were held for victims of the family. noah pozner and jack pinto. today, 6-year-old jessica rekos, who loved everything about horses. they'll be laid to rest. a wake will be held for a 27-year-old teacher victoria soto who saved many of her students by locking them in the closet before she was shot herself. police are confirming that doult two adults, not just one, who were shot at the school on friday survived

on our faces, even today the horror of newtown remains unspeakable. and as congresswoman mccarthy said, we have been here before. over and over again calling for action after these terrible massacres. but as she also said, this time it's different. this time we had 20 little beautiful angels and their teachers taken from us. and finally, our nation seems to realize collectively that it's the time to have a deep national conversation. now is the time for comprehensive solution, one that talks about our violent culture, our mental health system, and that talks about really doing something about gun violence. when we return in january, we are all planning to work hard together on a solution, on all of us solutions, but right now we can do something this week before congress leaves. we can pass legislation that will be a first and a reasonable step to help protect our children and to help show that congress has the will to begin stopping these massacres. this week we can bring to the floor a bill that congresswoman mccarthy and i introduced some months ago, co-sponsored by so many of our f

for a vigil, we were having for the newtown, connecticut awe awe -- i kept remembering the words even though i walk through the valley of the shadow of death, i will fear no evil for you are with me. i found myself asking in the car, how was it that he was able to walk so confidently through the valley of the shadows of death? i began to speculate, i thought perhaps he could do it because he had been in that valley before. i heard the story of the silver dollar that saved his life, she was shocked and had two silver dollars in his pocket. he had been in the valley of shadows before, walking through, not scurrying, not jogging, not running. with an eke anymorety of temperament he could walk through. i said there has to be more than that. i continued to drive and thought perhaps he was able to walk so confidently in too the valley of the shadows because he knew that there was light in that valley, you can't have shadows without light. i remembered his prayer breakfast speech only a few weeks ago how he talked about his faith roots and i knew that he had illumination in the valley. as the dome of
